Donald Gordon Griswold
The “WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME” Dementia Training Program was inspired by Donald Gordon Griswold, my father in law who suffered a multi-infarct dementia shortly before his death in April of 2000. Up until the day he was struck down with a multi infarct dementia, he was independent in his life, at home with his wife of many years, Frances, driving his car, enjoying his family, grandchildren, great granddaughters, pets and hobbies. He was an avid sportsman, hunter, fisherman, trap and skeet shooter and a “gentleman of the old school.”

One day, a month before he passed away, he went into the hospital for a few days of testing. He said goodbye to his son, who was going away for a few days. That night, while in the hospital, he suffered a stroke which left him with Dementia. From that time on, he only recognized his family. He did not know what happened to him. He asked his family over and over again, “What has happened to me? “Was I in a boat accident?” “Where am I?” “When can I go home?”
He was never the same again.
It is with love that I dedicate this program to him. Dementia can strike anyone for a variety of reasons. There are many causes of Dementia. It can affect any family. Many will end up in nursing homes. My hope is that CNAs will gain a greater understanding of the resident with Dementia and will treat them with dignity and compassion. They were somebody’s favorite person before Dementia struck.
They will never be the same again.
